San Mateo Chandelier

This chandelier—with copper work, leaded glass, blown glass, and repoussé—was tour-de-force artistry bringing together four artists and several craftspeople. Designed by Joseph Mross of Archive Designs, it features custom blown glass by Evan Chambers, a leaded glass shade by Ted Ellison, and stylized persimmons on the support link panels created by our own repoussé artist, Laurie Cox. The client, an author, had a special special fondness for the persimmon trees in their yard, thus this chandelier abstracts and pays homage to the persimmon.

Although an original creation, this hammered copper chandelier was inspired by the work of Viennese Secessionists, Joseph Maria Olbrich and Otto Wagner, as well as English Arts & Crafts architects CFA Voysey and M.H. Baillie Scott. This chandelier was one of several pieces done for a home in San Mateo, California. The additional items included a kitchen hood, fireplace screen, torchiere, and clock.

Another item made at the same time for the same client: A free-standing torchiere in beaten copper, with mica panels.
